Connector & Jumpers - MDB USB Ultra

The MDB-USB Interface Standard and Plus can be jumpered for various functionalities. The jumpers are easy to find if you open the case.

Connectors

ConnectorDescription
1USB Connector , this connector is used for data communication with the host and also powers the unit (5V, up to 500mA)
2

TTL Connector (3v3 Uart). Is also used as an input for Auto Mode.

Part number for the female connector to be used here: Molex - 2147562041

3USB A Connector, provides only USB Power , no data is exchanged in this connector. Can be used to power any device from USB when connected to the MDB Ultra. Output power : 5 V , Max 500mA.
4Not used.
5RS232 Connector.
6

MDB Connectors - VMC (left) and Peripheral (right)

'VMC', is an MDB master interface suitable to BE a VMC and connect peripherals, and the right connector labelled 'Peripheral' is an MDB slave port which usually connects to a VMC or other MDB master

7DC Power Output (5V up to 6A). This is an OUTPUT connector. Never use it as an INPUT
8Relays 1 - Normally Closed 2 - Common 3 - Normally Open

All Jumpers and what they mean:

JumperNameDescription
1Firmware UpdateWhen closed, automatically sets up the device to Firmware Update Mode
2Master/Slave JumperThese jumpers bridge the two MDB connectors (Master and Slaver). Jumper should normally be installed (they are necessary for sniffing). Remove them if you need separate master and slave functionality (also known as Split Mode). ** **NOTE: These jumpers must be set horizontally according to the direction of the schematic above.
3Power Selection 1Must be set when MDB USB is powered from MDB. Connects MDB GND level with USB GND Level. Useful for situations where MDB-USB is drawing its power from the MDB Bus or the USB (type A) is used to power the host. Recent versions (post 2022) have 2 jumpers in this position, in this case, both jumpers must be put on, vertically according to the image above.
4Power Selection 2When closed , the Power is drawn from the MDB. If Open, power is drawn from USB. Only available on legacy edition. Newer editions (post 2022) no longer feature this jumper!

Single/Sniffer Mode

This mode is suitable for situations where the MDB-USB Ultra is to operate either in Slave Mode or Master Mode Only. It is also possible to use sniffer mode with this configuration, either in coexistence with Master or Slave, or alternatively Only Sniffer. To have such configuration, jumper set 2 must be inserted.

Split Mode

Split mode is a special mode where the MDB USB acts as a peripheral to the Vending Machine and as a Vending Machine to the payment devices. This is typically only needed when the device is performing some sort of integration between otherwise incompatible MDB elements. To configure this mode, jumper set 2 must be removed.

This mode does not allow sniffing.
